We love to share our gardening experience and help keep you informed about timely gardening tasks. Here's a few things to do in the garden this month:
• Begin planting trees, shrubs and perennials now. Plant annuals after the danger of frost is gone.
• Apply three inches of mulch around plants to insulate from dryness and temperature variations.• Transplant tomato seedlings started in April to three inch plastic pots. Keep plants in a sunny, cool location and keep soil most. Transplant as soon as warm weather arrives.
• Prune flowering trees and shrubs after blooms appear and begin to wither.
• Fill window boxes and hanging containers with annuals. Apply mulch to conserve moisture.
• Spray roses with fungicide to prevent disease.
• Check for weed and insect problems regularly for early detection.
• Fertilize rhododendrons and peonies the last week of the month.
• Stake peonies as new foliage emerges. Refrain from removing foliage until it has yellowed.
• Trim hedges as necessary to maintain desired shape.
• Refrain from pruning oaks and elms until late July.
• Continue to provide fresh water and food for the birds.
