Indoor Plants

LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS FOR INDOOR PLANTS

Indoor plants provide an aesthetically pleasing and tranquil environment and cleanse the air, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen. The addition of a tall palm, hanging basket or flowering centerpiece on a table improve the ambiance of a room.

However, before choosing indoor plants, it is important to consider providing adequate light.

Check Available Light Conditions

Plants grown indoors need sufficient light, humidity and water and need to be grown in temperatures that will encourage healthy growth. Although indoor conditions can be manipulated to create the required water, humidity and temperatures, it is sometimes difficult to maintain the ideal amount of light without investing time and effort in special lighting or adding a greenhouse.

Plants shrivel and die with insufficient light. They need light to photosynthesize. Their leaves manufacture the plant's food and energy by absorbing light over the thin surface area. Also, plants need periods of darkness in order to rest and respire.

Gardeners will enjoy the benefits of healthy plants by choosing plants that are compatible with a home's normal conditions. Avoid changing conditions in a home drastically to comply with a plant's needs.

Artificial Light

Experienced gardeners, or those seeking a challenge, can improve growing conditions by adding supplemental light. If a room is dark, or plants are in a darkened area, add fluorescent lights to supplement the natural light. The intensity of the light and the length of time a plant receives artificial light can be controlled by timers. Although a plant's needs are the same as those grown under natural light, temperatures may be slightly warmer and the humidity lower. Check the moisture of the growing medium frequently. Most plants should be placed six to 12 inches from the light source. Rotate plants to even out their exposure to the light.

Artificial lights can greatly improve a plant's appearance and performance. However, care must be taken when choosing and maintaining light kits and bulbs Ñ ordinary incandescent bulbs will generate too much heat, burning foliage.
