FULL-SUN DECIDUOUS SHRUBS FOR CHICAGOLAND

Shrubs provide a wealth of color and design to landscapes. As borders and hedges, shrubs outline garden shapes. Spiraea x bumalda	Bumalda Spirea	2-3’ high, 4’ wide	‘Anthony Waterer’ has dark pink flowers and purple foliage.
			‘Froebelii’ has dark pink flowers and maroon foliage.
			‘Gold Flame’ has golden, copper and orange colored leaves.
Syringa x chinensis	Chinese Lilac	13’ high, 10’ wide	Tall shrub. Purple and lavender flowers bloom in May. Turns green in fall.
Spiraea bullata	Crispleaf Spirea	11/2’ high, 2’ wide	Blooms clusters of small, pink flowers. Slow-growing dwarf shrub.
Cotoneaster apiculatus	Cranberry Cotoneaster	3’ high, 5’ wide	Dark green foliage with pink flowers bloom in June. Leaves turn burgundy in fall and red berries appear. Excellent ground cover or wall plant. Slow grower.
Cotoneaster adpressus	Creeping Cotoneaster	6’ high, 7’ wide	Blooms pink flowers in June. Red berries and burgundy color in fall. Slow grower.
Viburnum opulus	European Cranberrybush	10’ high, 13’ wide	Clusters of white flowers cover the plant. Red berries appear in winter.
Cotoneaster lucidus	Hedge Cotoneaster	13’ high, 8’ wide	Hardy plant with red and yellow fall colored leaves. Black berries appear through winter. Moderate grower.
Berberis thunbergii	Japanese Barberry	5’ high, 6’ wide	Round shape with orange-red foliage appearing in fall. Thorny plant with small red fruit through winter. Ideal hedge plant. ‘Crimson Pygmy’ is smaller and has purple foliage.
Spiraea japonica	Japanese Spirea	5’ high, 4’ wide	Clusters of white to deep pink flowers bloom in June. Vigorous grower. ‘Alpina’ is smaller (1’-2’ high and wide) with delicate foliage and pink flowers.
Abeliophyllum distichum	Korean Abelialeaf White Forsythia	5’ high, 4’ wide	Densely clustered white flowers bloom in early April. Slow to moderate grower.
Syringa	Lilac Varieties	Various heights and widths.	All varieties bloom in May. ‘Donald Wyman’ has red-purple flowers. ‘Miss Kim’ has single lavender flowers. ‘President Grevy’ has blueish-lavender flowers. ‘President Lincoln’ has single pale lavender flowers. ‘Victor Lemoine’ has lavender flowers.

Cotoneaster divaricatus	Spreading Cotoneaster	6’ high, 7’ wide	Glossy, green summer foliage turns to dazzling yellow, red and purple in fall. Red berries and small pink flowers. Slow grower.
Rhus typhina ‘Laciniata’	Staghorn Sumac	20’ high and wide	Turns a brilliant orange-yellow and orange-red color in fall. Elegant textured leaves. Vigorous grower.
Chionanthus virginicus	White Fringetree	18’ high and wide	Blooms with clusters of white, feathery flowers. Yellow fall colored leaves. Female plants have deep blue berries in September. Slow grower.
