1

Petunia - Supertunia – Bordeaux

Petunia hybrid
Height: 6-10 inches
Sunlight: full sun
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Blooms all season with pink flowers highlighted by deep plum-burgundy veins; vigorous plants; fertilize often; low maintenance.  Plant alone or in combinations in all container types and landscapes.

Late July and August the plants should be at their best.  They will need a slow release fertilizer in spring.  In May fertilize once every two weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer.  In June when the weather is hot begin to fertilize weekly and soak the baskets. If you care for your Supertunias with watering and fertilizing they will look fantastic through September.

Salvia – Black & Blue

Salvia guaranitica
Height: 30-40 inches
Sunlight: sun or partial shade
Water: dry to normal
Uses: beds, borders and large containers

Electric blue flowers contrast sharply with the black stems in summer.  Used either in the back or middle of a container.  Salvia is a taller item that adds height and drama to the container.  Deadheading will encourage repeat blooming.  Attracts hummingbirds.

3

Verbena – Superbena Dark Blue

Verbena hybrid
Height: trails up to 48 inches
Sunlight: full sun
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Clusters of flowers all season; vigorous plants, low maintenance.

Self-cleaning, no deadheading is necessary.  Superbena are the most vigorous, heat tolerant, and mildew tolerant series.  While always great in containers they are also fantastic in landscape beds.  They can tolerate dry soils and lower fertility.  An application of slow release fertilizer or amending with compost is enough to keep them blooming in landscape beds. Regular fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.  Trimming them back will encourage additional branching, fuller plants, and ultimately more flowers.

4

Dahlia – Mystic Desire

Dahlia hybrid
Height: 18-24 inches
Sunlight: full sun
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Showy star-shaped orange flowers appear to jump off the dark foliage.  Used in mixed combinations, landscapes and beds.  Deadheading will encourage additional blooming.

Dahlias form tubers and these tubers can be stored for replanting in the spring.  To dig and store tubers follow these directions.  First, allow frost to kill the top of the plant then cut back the stems and dig the tubers.  Wash of any soil and allow the tubers to dry.  Wrap the dry tubers in newspaper or pack them in peat moss. Store tubers in a dark, cool (35 to 45 F) place and do not allow the tubers to freeze.

Geranium – Caliente Coral

Pelargonium

Double Impatiens – Rockapulco Appleblossom

Impatiens walleriana
Height: 10-20 inches
Sunlight: partial shade or shade
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes, containers and combinations

Light up any shady area with masses of blooms that resemble miniature rosebuds.  No deadheading necessary and blooms spring to frost.

Rockapulco impatiens are very easy to care for, provide them with a shady location, give them a bit of fertilizer and don’t let them dry out too much and they will be happy.  An application of fertilizer or compost on garden beds and regular fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.  If they get too tall, you can cut them back to promote additional branching and more compact habit.

7

Lobelia – Laguna Sky Blue

Lobelia erinus
Height: 8-10 inches
Sunlight: full sun to partial shade
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Soft blue flowers all season on cascading, well-branched plants; good summer performance with low maintenance.

Self cleaning, no deadheading necessary.  Laguna do not like “wet feet”.  Be sure that you do not keep the soil wet.  Allow the soil surface to dry before watering again.

The newer types of Lobelia are more heat tolerant and will reliably bloom in warm temperatures unless night temperatures stay in the upper 70’s or above.  If night temperatures stay high the plants may flush out of bloom, however, the plants should continue to look good.  Give a slight overall trim and this should encourage additional branching and increased flower power.

A yearly application of fertilizer or compost on garden beds and regular fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.

New Guinea Impatiens – Infinity Orange

Impatiens hawkeri
Height: 10-14 inches
Sunlight: partial shade or shade
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Vigorous, upright plants with large flowers.  Great flowering color for shady areas. Self-cleaning with no deadheading necessary.  New Guinea Impatiens as a hanging basket require a lot of water to do well during the heat of the summer.  They do best in shady locations, but have been shown to do fine in hot sun as long as they are well watered. If the plants get dry and are wilted, even if they are severely wilted, water them immediately and they should bounce back within several hours.

A yearly application of fertilizer or compost on garden beds and light fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.

ColorBlaze Kingswood Torch

Solenostemon scutellarioides
Height: 36-42 inches
Sunlight: sun or shade
Water: normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Stunning magenta foliage overlaid with burgundy all summer. Coleus is a taller item that adds height and drama to a container. Many people feel that coleus look best before they flower.  To keep foliage in top shape, pinch off the blooms as they appear.

An application of fertilizer and regular fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.

Bacopa – Snowflake Snowstorm Giant

Sutera cordata
Height: 4-8 inches
Sunlight: sun or partial shade
Water: normal
Uses: containers

Good plant to use in hanging baskets and window box combinations.  Unlike most plants, Sutera will not wilt when drought stressed.  If the plant becomes drought stressed it will take about two weeks to come back into bloom. You should water before the soil becomes too dry.  Some good plants to consider as a combination with Sutera are verbena, coleus, and petunias.

An application of fertilizer will help ensure the best possible performance.

Angelwing Begonia – Dragon Wing Red

Begonia hybrid
Height: 14-18 inches
Sunlight: sun or partial shade
Water: dry to normal
Uses: landscapes and containers

Vigorous and heat tolerant with abundant flowers all summer.  This is a great plant to fill open shady spaces.

When bringing plants indoors from an outdoor garden make sure your plants are free of insect or disease.  Indoor conditions are generally lower light so the plant will have to adjust to lower light levels and sometimes they will drop their leaves and grow new ones. All Begonias need bright filtered light and a source of humidity.  Use a pebble tray under your plants where water can be added as it evaporates to keep the humidity higher.  A pebble tray is a container that holds water filled with pebbles so your plant sits on the pebbles and not in water itself, water evaporates around the plant and creates a small “greenhouse” effect.  Keep lightly most and lightly fertilized through the winter months.  Do not allow the plant to become very dry.
