Pest Control for Houseplants

Keep your houseplants healthy by identifying common pests.

When choosing a houseplant make sure you are bringing a healthy plant into your home.   Insects can spread quickly and infect other plants.  Listed below are the most common indoor plant pests:

Spider Mites are red spiders that appear as red dots and you will often be able to see webbing on your plant.  These mites will suck the plant fluids resulting in browning of the foliage.

Mealybugs are an insect that is covered with a white, waxy substance.  Wilting and death of the plant will result without treatment.    Mealybugs are usually found on the underside of leaves and along the veins.  Both spider mites and mealybugs can be treated successfully with Safer Insecticidal Soap.  Make sure to spray the leaf completely, front and back, and treat several times a week until completely gone.

Scale is much more difficult to control and is the most destructive plant feeding insect.  Scale will appear as a disklike covering, and underneath is the destructive insect that will feed resulting in stunting and yellowing of the foliage.  They are usually found on the undersides of leaves and on stems.   Scale requires long term treatment to completely solve the problem.  Treat with Bonide Eight making sure to spray the top and bottom of the leaves.  This should be done once a week for three to four weeks until completely gone.
