Mums and asters are always a colorful spot in the September garden. But, they don’t have to be the only ones. This year, why not give fall-blooming anemones, also known as Japanese anemones, a try?
These hardy perennials thrive in zones 4-7 and bring an elegant touch to the late season garden—blooming from August until October, depending on the cultivar. The daisy-like flowers rise from dark-green, leaves and float like butterflies on long stems. Bloom range in color from pure white to light and dark pinks and purples with single, semi-double or double petals. They do best in light to partial shade and a moist soil but well-drained. Or, they can tolerate full sun, if the soil is kept moist. Keep it in mind… these a plants do spread by creeping rhizomes—especially if you give them an ideal light, moist soil rather than a dry one. However, they are not considered invasive in our area. If they do creep in on your smaller plants, it’s easy to pull out the encroaching intruders. (Groupings of fall-blooming anemones make a nice groundcover.) After blooms fade, no deadheading is necessary. However, some gardeners like a neater look and they will snip the stems as the flower petals fade. Even you choose not to deadhead, the remaining, button-shaped, seed heads can look interesting, too. Upon the first frost, the foliage turns yellow and darkens. Some gardeners prefer to trim the leaves down to the ground or some allow it to remain as a protective, winter mulch. The flowers of the fall-blooming anemones are always a subtle signal that autumn is on its way.
