FAQ: Why Buy Pasquesi Bird Seed?

bird seed

Better than the rest....

No, it’s not your imagination… the bird seed you bought at Pasquesi really does attract more birds to your backyard feeders! There’s a reason… actually, quite a few. Read on! Maybe we can help you and feed a few birds by answering a these questions…

How do you know if the bird seed is fresh? Quality as well as freshness is key to attracting the songbirds that you want to see at your bird feeders. DeLong Seeds is a local company and include ingredients that are food quality seeds that are repurposed for non-human consumption. DeLong harvests fresh seeds directly from a growing location and sends them to their processing facility as soon as the seeds are harvested and makes them available on our shelves within weeks! This rapid turnover ensures a high oil content, a fresh taste and great appearance. The Pasquesi 4 Seasons No Waste seeds are bagged fresh every time we place an order.

Are you frustrated by the number of seeds wasted under your feeders? Many less expensive seed blends contain a small round seed called milo. It’s used as filler ingredient because it’s cheaper. The DeLong Seed Co. blends that Pasquesi carries won’t include milo. Most wild birds won’t eat it except for a few ground feeders such as European Starlings and House Sparrows. Birds will push it to the ground in search of the tastier seeds, resulting in a mess under the bird feeder.

What seed mix would you use for a deck or an area where you don’t want seeds on the ground? Our custom blend, Pasquesi Four Season No Waste, is the best because it includes all the good stuff such as sunflower meats, millets, peanut pieces and cracked corn… very attractive to most songbirds but without the shells or waste.

How do I get cardinals to dine at my feeders? Cardinals love sunflower seeds of all types, but the Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (those with the black shells) are their favorite, high-energy food! Or, try the Cardinal Blend… a mix of sunflower seeds, safflower, and peanut pieces. …guaranteed to bring them to your feeder.

Finches are such cute birds to watch. How do you tempt them to your backyard feeder? These tiny birds thrive on Nyjer seed… a tiny seed that packs a lot of energy. A special Finch Tube Feeder is designed to hold the small seeds so finches and nuthatches can delicately take one at a time. Or spoil them with Premium Wild Finch Plus. It’s a blend of Nyjer seed, sunflower meats, hulled millet, canary seed, red millet, and flax seed.

Why do the bird seed prices fluctuate? There are many reasons why these prices change:

  • As seeds are a planted crop, drought and other weather-related problems can all affect the harvest.
  • Freight costs have sky-rocketed recently.
  • Global supply and demand issues that the recent pandemic have engendered.

WHICH BIRD FEEDERS ATTRACT WHICH BIRDS?

Tube Feeder: American Goldfinch, House Finch, Nuthatch

Platform Feeder: House Finch, Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal, Song Sparrow

Hopper Feeder: House Finch, Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal

Suet Feeder: Northern Cardinal, Nuthatch, Warbler, Woodpecker, Wren

Nyjer or Thistle Seed Tube Feeder: American Goldfinch, House Finch, Purple Finch

Caged Bird Feeders: Tubular feeders are well-guarded by cage-like grids that birds can flit through. They act like prison bars for squirrels and larger birds. The wire grid is chew-proof and keeps the squirrels away from the seed tube.

Baffle-style Squirrel-Proof Feeders: Bird feeders with domes or smooth baffles protect valuable bird seed as well as, the bird feeder. Squirrels and raccoons have a hard time climbing the feeder and will end up slip-sliding away. The baffles can provide a feeder with the perfect defense system against squirrel damage and will allow the birds to eat in peace!

Weight-activated Bird Feeders: Bromes' Squirrel Buster feeders are another clever way to squirrel-proof a feeder is to use a Weight-Activated Feeder. When the heavier weight of the squirrel triggers a spring, it closes off the access to the seed supply. When he leaves, the seed is available to your favorite birds again.

Weight-activated Squirrel-proof Feeders such as the Droll Yankee Feeders Bird Feeders: The Flipper, Whipper & Dipper. Each of these mechanical-type feeders keep squirrels off balance and away from the bird seed. Weight- triggered feeders operate on the principle that uses the squirrel's weight to trigger a battery-operated motor to flip or spin the feeder's perch.

ABOUT WILD BIRD SEED

Feed Birds High Energy Seeds: Especially during the colder months, birds such as tiny finches, will eat the equivalent of one-third of their body weight every day! It’s best to offer them Nyjer seed—a very small, oily seed that’s full of energy. Cardinals love sunflower meats, black oil sunflower seeds (easily identified by their dark shells), and millet seeds… and they’re all high in fat. Safflower is a white seed that is very high in protein and fat. It’s a bitter seed that attracts finches, mourning doves, however squirrels, grackles, starlings & blackbirds will prefer to dine somewhere else. Good!

PREMIUM WILD BIRD SEED

PASQUESI FOUR SEASONS No-Waste Wild Bird Food: A premium mix of sunflower meats, white and red millet, peanut pieces and cracked corn.  This blend is designed to entice songbirds but reduce waste around the feeder (no hulls).

DELCO PREMIUM: Wild birds love the quality ingredients, and you’ll appreciate the low waste mixture of black and striped sunflower, safflower, white millet, sunflower meats, cracked corn, red millet, peanut pieces, Nyjer (thistle) seed and grit.

DELCO WILD BIRD: Attract all types of colorful songbirds at a moderate price with black sunflower seeds, safflower, white millet, red millet and clean, cracked corn. No milo included.

CARDINAL FOOD: Invite bright-red cardinals, blue jays, nuthatches and other wild birds with a blend of high-energy black oil sunflower, striped sunflower seeds, safflower, and peanut pieces… guaranteed to bring them to the feeder!

CHICKADEE BLEND with FRUIT: Invite those cheerful, black-capped chickadees with this special mix of black sunflower seeds, white millet, safflower, red millet, peanut pieces, sunflower meats, dried raisins, dried cranberries, and cherry flavoring.

WILD FINCH PLUS: A blend of Nyjer/Thistle seed, sunflower meats, hulled sunflower, red millet, canary seed, and canary grit that is perfect for goldfinches, purple finches, siskins and other song birds.

DELCO WOODPECKER FOOD: Woodpecker varieties, like the little ‘Downy’ woodpecker and its look-a-like, the ‘Hairy’ woodpecker or the Red-Headed woodpecker, will become regulars at your bird feeder when you offer them this mix of peanuts, sunflower meats, shell corn, black sunflower seeds, dried raisins, and dried cherries.

PEANUTS: Whether in the shell or not, peanuts are a high calorie, fat-rich nut that appeals to many backyard birds such as nuthatches, blue jays, woodpeckers, and chickadees. Since nuts don’t freeze, it’s the perfect food for winter birds. (However, squirrels love them, too!)*

SUET: Suet offers birds a super, high-energy food in many shapes and sizes. Suet cakes, cylinders and suet logs are high in fat, protein, and calories and are enjoyed by many birds, year around, but especially in fall and winter when seed and insects are scarce. especially nuthatches, chickadee, as and woodpeckers. Suet cakes are even more enticing when additional ingredients such as peanuts/peanut butter, seeds & fruit are added. If you have problems with squirrels eating the suet before the birds get a chance, try Mr. Bird’s Flaming Feast suet block in 2 sizes. Birds like it, but squirrels do not.

*Hint, hint... Keep squirrels happy with their own feeder. It often helps to feed squirrels with a separate feeder in an area distanced from bird feeders. Keep those persistent critters busy with their own favorites such as dried corn and peanuts.
